Our Story

The origin of NeeDoh traces back to Schylling, a toy company that has been designing playthings since 1975. The company started when Jack Schylling began selling small, wind-up rubber-band-propelled bird toys on the streets of Boston. Jack noted that the design was inspired by an old sketch from Leonardo da Vinci. When windy days made the bird toys difficult to fly, Jack adapted by adding other classic, nostalgic toys that he had loved during his childhood.

To help manage the growing business, Jack brought in his brothers, David and Tom. Over the next few decades, Schylling grew into a recognized brand for retro and nostalgic toys, securing rights to produce Lava Lamps, Sea-Monkeys, tin toys, hand puppets, sock monkeys, and the Big Wheel. By the early 2000s, the company was based in North Andover, Massachusetts, and had grown to around 20 million dollars in yearly sales. Today, Schylling is led by CEO Paul Weingard, who originally joined the company years ago to lead product development before taking over full leadership.

In 2017, the development team worked on a slime-based version of their Lava Lamp and decided to explore sensory-focused toys. They worked to refine a unique squishy compound, making the formula progressively softer until it felt distinct from any traditional rubber stress ball on the market. They launched the product under the name NeeDoh, beginning with the original Groovy Glob.

The first batch was priced at 3.99 dollars and sold out completely within 30 days. Retailers immediately responded with repeat orders ten times larger than before. The branding, box styling, and packaging design were created by Mack Fraga, Schylling's head of product design at the time. Mack completed the visual identity in a single 24-hour stretch, selecting bright spot-printed colors and drafting the slogan "touch me, pinch me, squeeze me, squish me" directly on the packaging box. This packaging design actively invited shoppers to touch and try the glob in stores, boosting sales.

From that single ball, NeeDoh expanded into a full product line with more than 50 distinct styles, shapes, and textures. A few years after the original launch, the brand introduced the Nice Cube, which grew to surpass the popularity of the original ball. By 2023, the brand had gathered over 150 million views on TikTok and more than 5,000 tags on Instagram. In June 2025, Schylling marked its 50th year in business, reporting that demand for NeeDoh had doubled the company's total yearly sales between 2024 and 2025.

By late 2025 and continuing into 2026, viral interest on TikTok created widespread shortages at retail stores nationwide and overseas. High consumer demand persists, cementing NeeDoh as Schylling's best-selling product of all time. Due to these stock shortages, unbranded copies and counterfeit listings have appeared online, making quality authentication essential for buyers.

What Makes It Different

Standard stress balls rely on rubber or simple foam that can stiffen, lose elasticity, or remain dented. NeeDoh is formulated to stay soft regardless of usage, returning to its starting shape every time. The brand develops distinct textures and resistance levels, allowing users to select slow-rising, fast-snapping, bumpy, smooth, or solid compounds to suit their preferences.

Tactile feedback provides a grounding mechanism that helps direct focus. Therapists recommend these tools to patients managing anxiety or stress, and teenagers use them as focusing aids in academic settings. Additionally, hand stiffness and joint conditions can be assisted by the regular, low-impact exercise of squeezing the dough compound.

How We Verify Quality

Because of the recent shortages, fake listings have become common online. We prioritize helping users identify authentic Schylling products. Real NeeDoh toys feature the Schylling brand name molded or printed on the toy or its packaging box. Full-size items display small, embossed markings on their outer surface. Authentic models avoid strong chemical odors or stiff, non-responsive materials.

Materials & Safety Standards

Safety and transparency guide the production of every glob. The interior compound consists of a non-toxic blend of food-grade maltose sugar, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and cornstarch. Adjusting the ratio of these ingredients determines the resistance of each specific style.

The outer lining is entirely free from BPA, phthalates, and latex, making it suitable for sensitive skin. All items are rated for ages three and up due to potential choking hazards with smaller pieces.
